A Ring of Coffins Mini Quilt

So excited to have finished these really fun and adorable mini quilts featuring Ghastlies and Jack Skellington fabrics.

IMG_1721IMG_1701I used the awesome “A Ring of Coffins” paper piecing pattern by MiniASD on Etsy and added the faces from a template that I created.

After hand stitching the coffins together I hand stitched the faces using an invisible stitch. I thought about machine appliquéing them to the coffins, but I enjoy watching tv and hand stitching a lot of my crafty things.

I love these modern Halloween colors by Cotton and Steel, and I added some jewel tones from Allison Glass

I appliquéd bats and a floral motif in the corners and center from a piece of Angela’s Attic and machine quilted around the coffins. Added a spider charm and pockets in the back for hanging, then finished the two minis with hand stitched black binding.

Deer Butterfly Mini Quilt

I love quilting and embroidery, so when I saw this gorgeous deer butterfly print by Michael Miller, I knew i had to make quilts and embroidery on it.deerbutterfly10

You don’t have to start with a blank canvas or even use iron on embroidery patterns to practice stitching. Pull interesting fabric from you stash and practice your embroidery.

I wanted to make a min wall quilt with scraps from the quilt so I just cut out some squares and framed the deer. Added cotton batting to the back and started my random design.

I started with simple lazy daisies, added straight stitch and french knots, then I went back and filled with lighter and darker colors in a straight stitch and outlines. I try to use 1, 2 and 3 strands of floss for texture while I stitch. It’s all unplanned. Just an exercise in stitching free style with no design.

Soon this handsome deer had a floral wreath around his neck and a crown of flowers. It’s very spring and very me!  Finished size is approximately 12.5 x 9 inches
